The International Association of Firefighters (IAFF Local 526), Lexington’s own core of dedicated men and women who put their lives on the line to keep us safe, are getting a new home. The new facility – not a fire station itself – will become home to the 526’s Union operations, offices, and meeting spaces.
Lexington currently boasts 23 total fire houses located across the city, each with their own rotation of firefighters. On various occasions throughout the year, the collective group has a need to come together to discuss various agenda items and has been in desperate need for a dedicated facility in which to gather for several years.
The new Union Hall will contain large indoor and outdoor gathering spaces for various types of events and gatherings across the main floor. The upper level will house several offices and smaller meeting spaces. The design reflects the timeless aesthetic of urban and suburban station houses that most have begun to associate with firefighters and their bases of operation. This is primarily visible in the arch-topped statement window, red accents, and glass garage doors.
As citizens of Lexington and central Kentucky, we are honored to have the opportunity to work with our local heroes on such an important and exciting project.
The project is currently in the design phase and will be constructed by the Hayden Company in 2016.
